Blackjack is a card game in which the player aims to beat the dealer without exceeding 21. This guide explains card values, common player decisions, payouts and basic strategy, followed by an overview of Blackjack Neo at Yuugado.
The sections below cover common blackjack rules. Individual games may use different payouts, dealer rules and limits on actions such as doubling or splitting.
Cards 2 through 10 count at face value. Jacks, queens and kings count as 10. An ace counts as either 1 or 11.
A hand with an ace counted as 11 is called a soft hand. For example, an ace and a 6 make soft 17. If a 9 is added, the ace counts as 1 and the hand becomes hard 16.
A natural blackjack consists of an ace and a 10-value card in the original two-card hand. A total of 21 made with three or more cards is usually treated as an ordinary hand.
The simplest decisions are to hit for another card or stand with the current total. Other actions change the stake or divide the cards into separate hands.
| Action | What happens | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Hit | Another card is added to the hand. | A hand of 10 and 4 becomes 19 after receiving a 5. |
| Stand | The player finishes taking cards and keeps the current total. | Standing on 20 leaves that total to be compared with the dealer’s hand. |
| Double down | The stake is doubled, and the player receives one final card. | A 10-unit bet becomes a total stake of 20 units. |
| Split | A pair is divided into two hands, with an equal additional stake placed on the second hand. | Splitting a pair of 8s with a 10-unit bet creates two hands, each with a 10-unit stake. |
| Surrender | The player gives up the hand and usually receives half the original stake back. | Surrendering a 10-unit bet returns 5 units and forfeits the other 5. |
Tables may limit doubling to certain totals, restrict the number of splits or allow surrender only at a particular stage of the round. Split aces often have separate restrictions on drawing additional cards.
A hand that exceeds 21 busts and loses immediately, even if the dealer later busts.
The dealer follows fixed drawing rules. In common formats, the dealer draws on totals of 16 or less. On hard 17 or higher, the dealer stands.
Soft 17 is handled differently across tables. An S17 rule means the dealer stands on soft 17; H17 means the dealer draws another card.
Once both hands are complete:
The player wins if the dealer busts and the player’s hand is still 21 or below.
If both hands remain at 21 or below, the higher total wins.
Equal totals usually result in a push, with the original stake returned.
A natural blackjack generally beats an ordinary 21 made with three or more cards. If both the player and dealer have a natural, the result is usually a push.
A standard winning hand usually pays 1:1. A winning 10-unit bet earns 10 units in profit, and the original 10-unit stake is returned.
Natural blackjack payouts commonly use 3:2 or 6:5:
| Result | Profit on a 10-unit stake | Total return, including the stake |
|---|---|---|
| Standard win at 1:1 | 10 units | 20 units |
| Natural blackjack at 3:2 | 15 units | 25 units |
| Natural blackjack at 6:5 | 12 units | 22 units |
| Push | 0 units | 10 units |
The blackjack payout, dealer’s soft-17 rule, number of decks and restrictions on doubling or splitting all affect the game’s mathematical return. Unlike roulette’s standard wheel-based figures, blackjack’s expected return also depends on the player’s decisions.
Basic strategy matches the player’s hand with the dealer’s visible card to identify the action with the highest expected return under a specific set of rules. Charts cover hitting, standing, doubling, splitting and, where available, surrender.
A chart usually separates hard totals, soft totals and pairs. The player’s hand appears along one axis and the dealer’s upcard along the other. The action at their intersection gives the decision for that combination. Some entries also include a fallback action when doubling or surrender is unavailable.
For example, a common multi-deck chart calls for hitting hard 16 against a dealer’s 10 when surrender is unavailable, but standing on hard 16 against a dealer’s 6. The first example concerns a hard total treated as a regular hand; a pair of 8s is checked in the chart’s pair section.
Charts are calculated for particular rules, including the deck count, the dealer’s treatment of soft 17 and whether doubling after a split is allowed. Their purpose is to compare decisions over repeated hands using those assumptions.
Blackjack Neo is a software-based blackjack game from Relax Gaming. It supports multiple hands in the same round, with decisions made separately for each hand.
A standard winning hand pays 1:1, while a winning natural blackjack pays 3:2. A push returns the stake. Additional options include insurance and even money.
The Best Move Indicator uses the player’s cards and the dealer’s upcard to highlight an action based on basic strategy. When enabled, the suggested action is underlined. The game also includes speed and audio settings.
The supplied game display lists the following figures:
| Display item | Value |
|---|---|
| Minimum bet | 300 |
| Maximum bet | 900,000 |
| RTP — 1 day | 98.17% |
| RTP — 7 days | 97.26% |
A three-card 21 is usually an ordinary hand. The higher blackjack payout applies to an ace and a 10-value card in the original two-card hand.
The player’s hand loses as soon as it exceeds 21. A later dealer bust does not change that result.
S17 means the dealer stands on soft 17. H17 means the dealer takes another card on soft 17. An ace and a 6 are an example of soft 17.
Check the blackjack payout in the game’s rules or payout information. Look for wording such as “Blackjack pays 3:2” or “Blackjack pays 6:5”; the standard 1:1 win payout is listed separately.
The minimum and maximum bet amounts are listed within each game or on the Game Rules page.
Insurance is a separate bet offered when the dealer shows an ace. It pays when the dealer has blackjack. Even money is an option offered when the player already has a natural blackjack and the dealer shows an ace; accepting it settles the player’s hand at a 1:1 profit.
